EL PASO (U.S. ARMY) — Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division also known as the “Iron Knights” visited with students from Santa Teresa Middle School during their annual Thanksgiving lunch Nov. 21.
The Iron Knights participated in discussion sessions with individual classrooms, where students had an opportunity to ask each Soldier about what it means to serve their country.
Principal, Rosa Lovelace expressed her deep appreciation for the close relationship that Santa Teresa Middle School and the Iron Knights have cultivated. Lovelace said she values every opportunity her students have to connect with the community and meet professionals from different backgrounds.
When opportunities for Soldiers to speak with students come up, positive feedback from faculty and students follows. November’s classroom visits was no exception.
During the 45-minute classroom visits, students asked their guest Soldiers questions. Students wanted to know what being a Soldier was like—everything from where they were from and why they joined, to what they liked to do after work. Soldiers dispelled Hollywood rumors and put a human face to the men and women in uniform.
After the question and answer session, the twelve Iron Knight Soldiers ate lunch in the cafeteria with the students. They enjoyed a great, traditional Thanksgiving lunch and finished it off with a slice of pumpkin pie.
Both the Iron Knight Soldiers and Santa Teresa Middle School staff were thankful for the opportunity to participate in an event that inspires students and brings Soldiers closer to their community.
