Alleged gunman in custody; schools' lock-down lifted

UPDATE: 12:32 p.m.: Police dispatch confirmed just after noon Friday that a suspect, an alleged gunman, was in custody after being captured in central El Paso. No injuries were reported. A lockdown for YISD schools in the east El Paso area was lifted.

UPDATE 12:10 p.m.: Three additional YISD schools are on modified lock-down. They are East Point, Eastwood Heights and Edgemere elementary schools. That makes for a total of nine YISD campuses on lock-down this morning.

Original: YISD officials annoucned Friday that various schools would be on precautionary lock-down in response to police reports of an alleged gunman traveling on Hawkins Boulevard.

Del Norte, Eastwood Knolls and Scotsdale Elementary Schools, along with Ranchland Hills Middle School, Eastwood High School and Valle Verde Early College High School were placed on modified lock-down just after 10 a.m.

Their modified lock-down involves locking all external doors and keeping everyone indoors. YISD officials said security is on alert and monitoring the situation and is working closely with the El Paso Police Department. All students and staff members are safe.
