"Angry Birds" will soon arrive at your local movie theater - and they'll be in 3-D.

Sony Pictures announced Wednesday that the studio's acquired rights for the animated film, which will be developed, financed and produced by Rovio Entertainment, the creator of the addictive "Angry Birds" game.

Rovio masterminded the top-selling mobile app, which has users fire birds at pigs with a slingshot in an effort to get the birds' stolen eggs back.

We don't know how they're going to make a plot out of that premise, but given that "Despicable Me" producer John Cohen and "Iron Man" executive producer David Maisel are involved in production roles, we're interested to see how this pans out.

"Every studio in town would love to add 'Angry Birds' to their slate," Sony Picture Entertainment's Chairman and CEO, Michael Lynton, and its Co-Chairman of Entertainment, Amy Pascal, said in a statement.

"There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table. We're thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together."

Sony plans to release the 3-D animated "Angry Birds" movie on July 1, 2016.
