Auditors review LCPD officer misconduct complaints

Results show positive improvement

The City of Las Cruces heard a report Monday afternoon on complaints issued against officers with the police department.

An independent auditor says they have reviewed almost 50 cases where officers have had to 'use force' and are pleased with the change in culture in the department.

"They make sure we are doing everything correctly, and making sure everything is up to speed and we are doing everything correctly," said Police Chief Richard Williams.

Of those cases 50 only 24 were actually investigated and 16 of those complaints were initiated by the police department itself.

The auditors praised the department for actively conducting those investigations and "policing itself'.

The auditors said there were eight complaints by the public that typically result when officers respond to domestic disturbance calls and fights.

The department has also implemented an alert system that will trigger a red flag when an officer has had two "use of force" cases within a 30-day period.
The auditors also praised detailed reports by the multi-agency task force that investigates officer involved shootings.

The department will be seeking to become an accredited law enforcement agency this fall.
