EL PASO — Illegal entry and narcotic smuggling attempts were foiled by U.S. Border Patrol agents in El Paso and New Mexico Thursday, reports indicated.

Agents said Juan Carlos Eguino-Orduno, 40, made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the United States illegally Thursday. He was apprehended and further investigation revealed he had been previously convicted on two counts of 2nd degree murder in Santa Fe, NM and subsequently served several years in the penitentiary.

Eguino-Orduno was processed for a re-instatement of a prior order of removal and will be held at the El Paso County Detention Facility pending prosecution.

In a separate incident, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Las Cruces, NM, Station said they encountered a vehicle at the Interstate 10 checkpoint and after initial questioning the agents detected and seized 25 pounds of methamphetamines, with an estimated value of $800,000, concealed inside the vehicle. The driver was arrested and continues to be processed.
