Candidates file for EPISD board elections

The school board election for El Paso Independent School District is now less than three months away and three candidates have already announced they're running.

Today, James Lamonica filed the paperwork necessary to run.

Lamonica has 30 years experience as a teacher and campus administrator.

In December the Texas Education Agency Commissioner Michael Williams decided to strip the current school board of all its power and appoint a board of managers to run the district instead.

That won't actually take place until the Department of Justice approves the decision.

But Lamonica says the school board can help the public move on from the scandals that have plagued the district over the last several years, now.

"The way to move forward here is to get rid of people on the board now and elect new people with fresh ideas and a fresh drive to get things done. I would not only urge those four members that are currently on the board, not to run for re-election, but I think the 3 members not up for re-election should resign so new people could be elected in their place," he said.

Two others have also filed to run for school board -- Chuck Taylor in District 5 and Bob Geske in District 1.

Both have lived in El Paso for more than 20 years.
