Carlsbad, NM (KOB) — Police in Carlsbad are looking for two men they say committed a terrifying crime.
A man is recovering from severe burns after police say two men doused him with gasoline and set him on fire while he was simply watering his front lawn.
"It's just terrible," neighbor Bobby Northcutt said. "Nothing like this ever happens over here."
"I'm very shocked," Cherryle McGee said. "It really upsets me I mean because my mother is here alone a lot."
Police say the man was watering his grass around 10 p.m. Monday night when two people he did not know threw gasoline on him and set him on fire with a lit cigarette.
The two men then fled on bikes.
The man's family was inside the home and called police.
The 42-year-old suffered severe burns to his upper body and face.
"I've seen that man, I don't actually know him, but I've seen him for years, for the last 10 years over there working in the yard," Northcutt said.
"I walked out, and I just seen the guy out there on the front yard that's about all I seen," Cody Leyendecker said.
"That's what is scary the most, you know if it was kids or something or who it was, we don't know," McGee said.
Carlsbad police say they don't know who did this or why.
