El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — The City and County of El Paso are honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday through their 14th Annual MLK Canned Food Drive, which began Friday.
The drive's kick-off event was held at the Walmart Supercenter, 5631 Dyer St. Friday morning, and will benefit nine shelters in el paso including The Center Against Family Violence, La Fe Montana Vista Community & Resource Center, The El Paso Rescue Mission, The Opportunity Center for the Homeless, The Salvation Army and others, La Posada Home, El Paso Villa Maria, and the Reynolds Home.
"The process is simple. You just come in to your grocery store... donate at the drop-off container, and drop off your food and it'll be coordinated to be picked up and given to the needy," said Walmart store manager Luis Ramirez.
District 4 City Rep. Carl Robinson, the food drive's chair, estimates about 1,400 people who are homeless at any given time in the Sun City will benefit from your donations.
"All the shelters operate on donations and grants. This plays a small part in helping them with their efforts," he said.
If you'd like to donate any non-perishable goods, you can do so at any of the following locations through Jan. 20th.
