SUNLAND PARK, NM — A large crowd turned out for Monday's Commissioner's Court meeting to protest a proposed power plant off of Montana Vista in far east El Paso, and that plant looks very similar to one being built in Sunland Park. The Rio Grande station currently uses conventional steam technology, but a $75 million addition to the plant will change that.
The plant is getting new technology that's safer and cleaner for the environment.
"The technology is 35% more efficient than the conventional system, so we're improving that. We're burning less natural gas to get the same amount of power. The pollution stream is being cleaned up with some air controlled equipment," explained Andy Ramirez with El Paso Electric.
The new technology should be online in May.
