El Paso, TX (KDBC) — A convicted teen murderer could spend the rest of his life in prison. The jury in 19-year-old Juan Gonzalez's murder trial are now deciding just how much time he will spend behind bars.
The jury just went into deliberations around 5 pm, Tuesday, after a day of heart wrenching testimony that brought family members and even some jurors to tears. Gonzalez is looking at five to 99 years in prison for the beating death of Officer Jonathan Molina.
Several of Molina's family members testified in court today about how their loss. His mother, Christine Weaver was the first person called to the stand she said "my life is not the same anymore." As she described how she's been living without her youngest son.
Jessica Molina was five months pregnant with twins when her brother died. She told jurors that while he was in the hospital, she wanted a picture of her brother and her unborn twins before he passed... So she placed his hand on her belly. She told the court quote "He [Jonathan] was going to watch over them [Jessica's twin babies] while we pray."
Molina's brother took the stand and told jurors quote "We're already a small family. To lose him was huge," Mauricio Molina said.
Molina’s mother also took the stand and described the moment she saw her son that September saying quote "I saw my son's car. I thought something happened... I got close and I saw my son bleeding to death."
But it wasn’t just the victim’s family that teared up in court today. It was also an emotional day for Gonzalez’ family. In fact – he started crying... When his grandmother Maria Louisa told jurors about her Johnny and how he is the light of her life.
The Judge may decide to sequester the jury and resume Wednesday morning, or they may continue to work into the night until a decision is made.
