Convicted killer Daniel Villegas spent another birthday in jail Friday; this time he turned 36. Villegas was convicted by a jury when he was 16 that found him guilty of a double murder; a crime Villegas says he didn't commit.
A judge sentenced him to life in prison, but Villegas has claimed his innocence ever since. He says an El Paso Police Department detective forced his confession.
Villegas' supporters gathered today outside the courthouse in the name of Villegas' justice, and brought a message for the courts, "we really thought last year's birthday would be the last one and this is really disappointing but we're never gonna stop, we're always gonna fight for justice for my brother," said Villegas' sister Michelle Peña.
Judge Sam Medrano ruled in favor of granting Villegas a new trial in August 2012/ Judge Medrano sent his findings to the court of Criminal Appeals. claiming a new trial is merited because confessions were coerced and unreliable.
An Austin court has yet to rule on the case.
