Sheriff's Office: SUV rolled after striking rocks, then hit gas line

Friday, January 3, 2014 - 2:03pm

A driver is sent to the hospital after his SUV strikes several large rocks, rolls over a gas pipe and comes to rest against a fence in Fabens.

El Paso County Sheriff's officials say the wreck happened around 1:30am Friday morning, along the 400 block of Northwest Camp Street in Fabens.

When deputies arrived, they found a blue Chevrolet Tahoe upside down, just off the roadway. Their initial investigation found that the driver of the Chevy was traveling eastbound on Camp St and went into the westbound lane.

Deputies say the Tahoe then struck several large rocks, rolled over, struck a gas pipeline and came to rest against a chain link fence. The driver, who was the only one in the SUV received minor injuries and was transported to Del Sol Hospital.

Officials add that the damaged gas pipe was capped by Fabens Fire Department fire fighters and a representative from Texas Gas was requested to assess the damage to the line.

No homes had to be evacuated due to the gas pipe rupture, and there is no estimate on the damage to the fence or property.
