An Airman Returns Home to a Hero's Welcome

Sunday, May 9, 2010 - 7:34pm

Sunday, May 9: Larry Ochoa has been trying to play on the Heroes of the Diamond Military All-Star team for three years.. but deployments to Germany and Iraq to serve in the Air Force have prevented him from getting called up to the show.

He's never let that get him down.

Larry Ochoa: "You know, mission first. We all understand that being members of this team. The mission is priority, but getting the opportunity to play baseball is just a chance of a lifetime. You've got to take advantage of it."
he finally got his shot yesterday..and the timing worked out perfectly.

Growing up in Clint, Ochoa played in the senior showcase 10 years ago at Cohen Stadium.. so once again.. he had his own personal cheering section when he took the field.

Ochoa: "You're a kid and you dream about just playing pro ball at any professional level. This is professional ball right here. This is our show. This is our little form of MLB. Just to serve our country at the same time and get to play ball, that's a lifelong dream."

Ochoa had a few balls hit his way.. and failed to get a hit.. but nothing was going to bring him down on a night like this one.

Ochoa: "I had a blast. I had a blast. When you trip up a little bit, though. That's when it's like AH. You've just got to get back out there and produce. That's all you can do."

Ochoa said that he wanted to make El Paso proud with his play.. but the fact is.. he made El Paso proud as soon as he put on a uniform. Javi Perez, Newschannel 9 sports.
