The Center for Disease and Prevention reported Thursday that 89 people have been sickened by a salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts in 15 states including the District of Columbia.
The CDC said that the Illinois Department of Health reported 40 people who had become ill after eating the alfalfa sprouts at Jimmy John's restaurants.
The CDC said the investigation was ongoing, and the agency would continue to monitor new cases, along with the Food and Drug Administration and state and local public health partners. So far, the CDC has said 23 percent of the people infected were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
The CDC said there were 14 reports in Missouri, and nine in Indiana, and that the start of their illnesses ranged from Nov. 1 to Dec. 14, and ranged in age from 1 to 75 years old, with a median age of 28.
