EL PASO - After much controversy whether a championship fight would be allowed in the Sun Bowl, both fighters showed what they had in the ring Saturday night in front of thousands of fans.
At one point the bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Junior and Andy Lee was canceled because of security reasons. The fight was later reinstated but with an alcohol ban.
"We can have fun without alcohol, a lot of people I know though are not going to be happy without them selling beer," said Victor Sierra, who was tailgating before the fight.
The convention and visitors bureau set up a tailgate area so fans could still enjoy a few cold beers or, other beverages.
"Since we can't drink beer we went out to buy Cesar Chavez the energy drink," Sierra sad.
Chavez was the fan favorite as expected, but Andy Lee had a few fans all the way from Ireland in his corner.
John Foy and Patrick Heslan traveled more than 12 hours and spent quite a bit of money to see Andy Lee fight in person.
"Probably about $5,000, but you can't put a price on a world title," Foy said.
Julio Cesar Chavez Junior won by TKO in the seventh round.
