Former Riverside Ranger to Play for Team America in AIST Softball Tournament in Italy

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 - 6:58pm

Former Riverside Ranger and Current University of Southwest Softball player Dede Perez had an outstanding Junior season with U.S.W., batting .421 and finished with a slugging percentage of .628, 51 hits, 29 runs scored with 20 RBI. Those statistics, along with a fantastic academic standing, earned her an invitation to play with Team America at the AIST Softball Tournament in Italy.

"It's actually a dream come true, I've always wanted to play at a higher level. I never thought I would get this opportunity, to go overseas and play, and represent nationally. I'm one of them, and I feel very lucky and I am truly blessed for everything," said Dede. Her Father, David Perez, Jr., was equally as excited for her future. "Next year is her senior year, hopefully she will duplicate this year, she was all-conference, so hoping to play in that same tournament again and maybe get picked up by the Olympic team."

AIST teams will be made up of NCAA division I, II, III, Jr. College and NAIA athletes. Teams are filled for each level depending on the number of players we are able to find. The goal is to fill a competitive roster to represent the USA in international competition while giving the experience of a lifetime. Some tours are tournaments, some are just exhibition games with a competitive international schedule.

AIST receives invitations to participate in tournaments from around the world. Most of the tournaments have national teams competing as well as local club teams. We also set up exhibition games when possible before tournaments to give the athletes more opportunity to compete. Most of our teams will get between 5-7 games in a ten day period. The rest of the tour involves sightseeing and cultural education.
