Local High School Bands Fundraise for UTEP Student in Coma

Former Student in Coma at Arizona area Hospital

Friday, February 24, 2012 - 5:29pm

EL PASO — Two El Paso high schools have put down their rivalries for the moment to raise money for an ex-student who has been in an Arizona hospital since December.

Erin Ayub, 21, has been in an induced-coma in an Arizona hospital after being diagnosed with a rare illness-- anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis, according to the National Institute of Health, is a severe form of encephalitis associated with antibodies against NR1–NR2 heteromers of the NMDA receptor was recently identified. The disease is associated with tumours, mostly teratomas of the ovaries, and is considered a paraneoplastic syndrome.

Erin is currently at UTEP and is also a part of the UTEP Marching Miners Regiment.

The Montwood High School Ram band --where Ayub is an alumni-- has teamed up with the El Dorado High School Aztec band to raise money for Ayub and her family. Ayub's mother is a teacher at EDHS.

Thursday night, both bands were at the Peter Piper Pizza on Montana, where 15 percent of the sales went to the family.

"We [the MHS band boosters] actually presented a $3,000 check to the Ayub family," said Ron Pingor, band director at Montwood High. "We're still trying to determine how much was raised last night. We're also trying to gather whatever form of donations for Erin and her family."

Those willing to donate to Erin and her family can do so by sending donations to the El Dorado High School Band Boosters, or the Montwood High School Band Boosters. Donators will receive an official letter from the band to verify the authenticity of the donation(s).
