The New Mexico State volleyball team (1-1) swept the University of South Florida (0-2) winning 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 in day two of the MCM Elegante Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., Saturday, Aug. 27.
The Aggies were led by freshman outside hitter Meredith Hays and sophomore outside Stephanie Ziegler as both players tallied 12 kills. Senior setter Jennah DeVries marked her second double-double of the season with 37 assists and a match-high 12 digs.
"I thought we did a good job of closing out the sets tonight and we showed consistency," head coach Mike Jordan said. "USF is a scrappy team and made us work to get the win."
Senior Kelsey Brennan played well hitting .529 with 11 kills, while right-side player sophomore Deirdre Pajares finished the night with a career-high .538 hitting percentage and a career-high nine kills.
"We had good balance and we used our middles pretty well," Jordan said. "Deirdre (Parajes) played well on the right side on we passed three-passed the ball a lot better tonight."
Set one saw NM State pull away late in the set and win 25-18 after it was tied at 15-15. A Stephanie Ziegler kill gave the Aggies a 16-15 lead and NM State took off from their. Ziegler led all players with five kills in the first set.
NM State started the second set on a 4-0 run but USF rallied back to tie it at eight all. The Bulls took their first lead at 9-8 but NM State tied the set up at 10 and 11 before going on another four point rally. With the set tied at 18-18 the Aggies scored seven straight points to close out set No. 2 with Michelle Kuester picking up her second kill of the night.
The Aggies started the final set with a 5-1 lead but USF came back and tied it at 5-5. With the Aggies up 13-12, senior Kelsi Phillips set seven straight points which included one of her two aces on the night. The Aggies finished scoring the final two points of the match to win 25-18.
NM State looks forward to its third match of the weekend when it travels back to Las Cruces to face Nicholls State at 5pm, Sunday, Aug. 28 in the Pan American Center. Fans can listen to Kyle Doperalski give the play-by-play action on the radio at KSNM AM 570.
