Samantha Alvillar knocked in an inside the park grand slam in the sixth inning but the Miners (4-5) were unable to overcome an early deficit in the loss. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Miners with the first loss in the slide coming against NMSU last Tuesday.
NMSU struck first in the game in the third inning of play. After two scoreless innings for both teams the Aggies drove the first run home on a double by Staci Rodriguez. Tovio-Asato drove in the second run on a single and the third run scored after a wild pitch by Hohman. A double off the bat of Tehani Kaaihue brought in the fourth and final run of the inning. Cynthia Villastrigo came in relief of Hohman and struck out Amber Olive to end the inning.
The Aggies brought another run across in the fourth inning on a sac fly by Valerie Swedberg.
Camilla Carrera belted a solo home run off NMSU starter Alex Newman to get the Miners on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. The homer was the seventh of the season for the senior first baseman.
Laura Ramos came into the game for Villastrigo after she gave up two runs on a single in the fifth inning giving the Aggies a 7-1 lead over the Miners. Ramos got pinch-hitter Malena Padilla to pop up to short to end the inning.
The Miners staged a four run rally in the bottom of the sixth to close the lead to two runs with the Aggies leading 7-5. After Kayla Oranger doubled, Chelsea Troupe singled and Carrera walked Samantha Alvillar hit an inside the park grand slam.
NMSU got two of the runs back in the top of the seventh off Ramos. After getting Olive to groundout to short and striking out Covarrubia Ramos gave up the two runs on back-to-back doubles and a single.
Ashley Collazo led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double and Oranger singled off Newman(6.1 innings, 9 hits, 5 runs, 7 strikeouts). Karysta Donisthorpe came into the game for Newman after the single. Donisthorpe got Troupe and Carrera on a back-to-back swinging strikeouts to end the game.
UTEP will return to action this weekend when they travel to Waco, Texas to take part in the Fairfield Inn North Texas Shootout. The tournament will start on Friday, Feb. 24 and conclude on Sunday, Feb. 26.
