The Miners losing skid extended to seven games on Friday after they dropped their first two games at the Fairfield Inn North-Texas Shootout in Waco, Texas. UTEP (4-7) fell to Stephen F. Austin 4-1 and to #9 Baylor 11-1 in a five inning run rule.

Game One
Both starting pitchers, Colleen Hohman and A. White, allowed only one hit a piece in the first four innings. The Lumberjacks got their second hit in the top of the fifth but Hohman was able to get out of the inning without any damage.

In the bottom of the fifth with the game still scoreless Laura Ramos came in to pinch-hit and singled to center field. Chelsea Troupe brought her to the plate on a single for the first run of the game.

Hohman (1-4) pitched six scoreless innings and took a one run lead into the sixth inning against Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks broke out their bats to bring four runs across in the top of the seventh inning. A single, error, and a bunt single loaded the bases to start the inning and a walk brought home the tying run. With the bases still loaded Arana doubled to center field to break the tie and bring two more runs home. The last run of the inning was brought home on a bunt single.

Hohman pitched her second complete game of the season in the loss.

Game Two
The Baylor Bears rode two big innings to an 11-1 five inning victory on Friday over the Miners. Baylor jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning off of UTEP’s Laura Ramos who started her first game in the circle this season.

A bases loaded walk brought the first run home and the second run was scored on a wild pitch. A single to left center by Holl drove two more runs home in the inning.

The Bears bats got back to work in the bottom of the second stanza with six runs crossing the plate to extend their lead to 10-0. Ramos gave up three singles and one more run before Cynthia Villastrigo came in to pitch for her.

Villastrigo walked Hosack to load the bases and then walked in Holl and Wilson in consecutive at-bats for two more runs. Joanna Krienitz came in relief of Villastrigo with two outs in the inning. Krienitz walked Strickland and gave up a single to Guy to complete the sixth run inning. She got Shelton to fly out to center field to end the inning.

Troupe knocked one out of the park in the top of the third inning for her fourth home run this season and the Miners’ first run of the game.

Baylor brought home one more run on a sac fly off Krienitz in the bottom of the fourth. The Miners went down in order in the fifth inning to end the game.

Whitney Canion pitched four innings allowing only two hits and one run striking out seven Miners.

UTEP will look to rebound on Saturday when they take the field against Texas Tech at 9 a.m. The Miners will face Texas State in the second game of the day at 11:30 a.m.
