UTEP softball has announced the signing of Charissa Ballesteros, Kellie Eastman and Tahla Wade to national letters of intent to join the Miner squad in the fall of 2011.
Ballesteros is a 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NJCAA Division I All-Region second team selection out of Pima Community College. The catcher also garnered Arizona Community College Athletic Conference All-League Second Team honors.
“Charissa will bring leadership and experience behind the plate which will help the pitcher/catcher relationship,” co-head coach James Rodriguez said.
Ballesteros maintained a batting average around .400 during her career at Pima. The Rincon High School alum (Tucson, Ariz.) finished the 2011 season with 62 hits, 38 RBI, 28 runs in 169 at bats with an on-base percentage of .407. She is a graduate of Rincon
Eastman is a four-year letterman from Mountain View High School in Loveland, Colo. The infielder led the Mountain Lions to two state final four appearances and was named an all-state honorable mention as a sophomore and junior. The two-time 4A Northern All-Conference selection broke the single season home run record as a sophomore and was named the Mountain View High School Rookie of the Year in 2008 and the Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2008 and 2009. In 2009 Eastsman was recognized as a top Colorado Softball Player by ESPN Rise.
“Kellie will bring some defense to the left side of the infield,” Rodriguez added. “She will also bring some power to the hitting lineup.”
An outfielder out of Zion-Benton Township High School in Zion, Ill., Wade was also a 2009 rookie of the year playing for head coach Rick Rymer. She graduated top 2% of her class with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is a six-year recipient of the African American Achievement Award and was recognized by the North Suburban Leadership Conference.
“Tahla will bring some speed to the lineup and our outfield,” Rodriguez said.
Wade played with the Illinois Chill 16u and 18u Gold reaching the USSSA Northern Illinois State Championship and the USSSA 14U Nationals in 2007. She was the top speed and vertical jump performer at the 2008 Rising Stars NFCA Camp and the fastest player at the 2008 Triple Crown World Series.
