UTEP Softball splits with Evansville

UTEP (10-14) wrapped up their four game series with Evansville on Wednesday with a win and a loss in the double header. A high-scoring back and forth affair marked a 15-12 loss for the Miners in game one. The Miners scored early in game two in order to secure the 7-3 win.

Game One

Evansville took a 6-0 lead in the first two innings over the Miners.
A four-run inning by the Miners cut the lead to two runs. The inning was highlighted by Chelsea Troupe who hit a home run with two runners on base.
UTEP went into the fifth inning down 6-7 to the Purple Aces and put up a three spot off a Kayla Black home run to take their first lead of the game.

The Purple Aces regained their lead after Fortner hit a three run home run off Hohman who reentered the game after Joanna Krienitz pitched 3.2 innings of relief.

The Miners trailed 9-11 heading into the sixth inning with the heart of their order coming up to bat. Camilla Carrera led off with her 12th home run of the season to cut the deficit to one. Troupe reached on an intentional walk, and advanced on a sac bunt and wild pitch. Kayla Oranger singled Troupe home to tie the game at 11-11.

Evansville scored four in the top of the seventh to take a 15-11 advantage over UTEP.

Carrera hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh but that was the only run the Miners could bring across.

Carrera went 3-4 in the game with four RBIs and two home runs and Black went 3-3 with three RBIs.

Game Two

Troupe and Carrera hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the bottom of the first and give the Miners an early 2-0 edge over the Aces. A sac-fly by Courtney Ware scored Kayla Black for the third Miner run.

The Aces evened the score on a single, bases loaded, walk and sac-fly off of Villastrigo

Black picked up a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the third to regain the lead.

Kayleigh Walts belted her first home run of the season with a two-run jack to left field to extend the UTEP lead over Evansville.

Villastrigo(5-6) hurled her third complete game this season giving up just three runs on four hits striking out four.

Troupe and Carrera went a combined 6-12 hitting five home runs and driving in nine runs.

Kayla Black finished the four game series batting .643 with 7 RBIs off of four doubles, a triple, and a home run.

UTEP will open Conference USA play when they welcome in Southern Miss for a three game series this weekend. The Miners and Golden Eagles will play two games at the Helen of Troy Softball complex starting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 10.
