Washburn Brothers Turn UTEP Men's Basketball into Family Affair

Monday, June 18, 2012 - 6:39pm

Miner fans are eagerly anticipating the reunion of the Washburn brothers - Julian, who made the Conference USA All-Freshman Team this season, and Chris, who helped South Grand Prairie [Texas] High School to a 35-3 record his final year as a prep. Today, we had a chance to meet the two together. After losing their mother who suddenly passed away in October 2011, Chris said he felt comfortable playing with his brother at UTEP, and Tim Floyd likes the way Chris plays.

"In Chris, we feel like we've gotten a young guy with great instincts who can pass it, get it off the board and play in the open floor," Floyd said. "He can face and shoot, but more importantly he can catch it on the block and score with somebody on his back, which was always a challenge for our team this year. His body is still young. At 6-8, 245 pounds, he is going to have a great offseason in terms of toning his body and getting it right for the college game. We think he's got an incredible future. He's left-handed, and he's got an array of moves underneath the basket that indicate he has spent a great deal of time down on the block learning how to play. We hope for him to have a real impact on our team next year."

UTEP forward/guard Julian Washburn was one of five players tabbed to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Washburn joins Rice guard Dylan Ennis, Tulane guard Ricky Tarrant, Houston forward TaShawn Thomas and Houston guard Joseph Young on the squad.

Washburn led the Miners in scoring (11.5 ppg), starts (28) and minutes (33.6 avg.), and ranked second in steals (1.0 avg.). He shot 46.5 percent from the field and scored in double figures in nine of the last 12 games (13.3 ppg).

A four-time Conference USA Freshman of the Week, Washburn is the second-highest scoring freshman in the league behind Tarrant (15.2 ppg). The Duncanville, Texas native ranks eighth in C-USA in minutes, 14th in field goal percentage and 19th in scoring.

Washburn is one of eight UTEP freshmen to score 300 points in a season. His 333 points rank sixth in the freshman record book. Washburn scored a career-high 21 points in the Miners' last game at SMU on Saturday.

UTEP's previous C-USA All-Freshman Team selections were Randy Culpepper in 2008 and Arnett Moultrie in 2009.
