El Paso, TX (KDBC) — El Paso County Commissioners will be enforcing a new transparency law that will disclose the financial statements of school board members for independent school districts in the Borderland.
County Judge Veronica Escobar said the county is required to enforce House Bill 343, which will go into effect January 1, 0214.
The county is now looking into how they will do so and they're hoping to adopt new policies soon,
"My suspicion is that it will be a very easy process for the county attorney's office because the procedures for the rest of us already exist. And so, it's probably going to be a recommendation that we just piggy back on existing processes and procedures,” Judge Veronica Escobar said.
The new law has received criticism from the Canutillo Independent School District and County Commissioner Vince Perez issued a statement in support of the law stating, in part:
This requirement for school board members is a common sense solution to foster greater transparency, I am disappointed by recent efforts to undermine the new law.”
