El Paso County Commissioners have agreed to a settlement with Juan Ortegon who was shot by former deputy constable Mario Ramos back in 2008.
County Judge Veronica Escobar said the $600,000 settlement was more than the county had hoped to pay. The money will come from funds set aside in the budget for settlements. The decision was made to avoid the risk of a court case costing more than was budgeted for, according to Escobar.
Ramos was cleared in a jury trial of any wrong doing last year, but Ortegon filed a civil case against the county.
