The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is cracking down on drivers who illegally pass emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
Under Texas law, if an emergency vehicle is stopped a driver must leave the lane closest to the vehicle. If there isn't a lane to move into or traffic is too heavy drivers must slowdown 20 miles per hour under the posted speed limit.
The law applies to all emergency vehicles, tow trucks and TXDOT vehicles.
Fines for this offence can reach $500 and becomes a class B misdemeanor if the violation results in bodily injury.
