First IMAX Theatre in West Texas set to open Thursday

Thursday, November 21, 2013 - 3:29pm

The wait is over, El Paso. The new IMAX® Theater is scheduled to open at Premiere Cinema Thursday with an exclusive showing of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" at 8:00 p.m. and 11:15p.m. As of of 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, there were still a limited number of tickets available for the 8:00 p.m. showing, but Bassett Place says the tickets were selling fast. Early Thursday morning, preparations were underway in the parking lot as Bassett prepares for the theatre opening.

The new IMAX® screen replaces two standard screen auditoriums at the Bassett Place Premiere Cinemas Location. A new roof was erected approximately 45 feet high to accommodate this new technology at the theatre complex. The El Paso IMAX® location will be one of the largest IMAX® theatres in Texas, with a screen 70 feet long by five stories tall.

"IMAX® will be a major attraction for Bassett Place," said Michael Wheat, Executive Vice President and Director of Leasing for Cypress Equities, the owner and managing agent for the mall. "We are proud and fortunate to be able to bring an amenity of this scope and magnitude to the El Paso and Fort Bliss area."

The opening of the IMAX® theatre is significant for EL Paso, because it is the only true commercial IMAX® operating between Lubbock and Albuquerque in the United States.
