To kick-off Fire Prevention Week, the El Paso Fire Department is out in the community promoting fire safety.

Firefighters were at Mission Valley Elementary school to sign-up families for free smoke alarms. In the next few days, firefighters will go out to their homes to install the alarms for free.

A school counselor said safety starts at home.

"I believe that it's extremely important for kids to feel safe. Giving the kids the explanation of what it is to have a smoke detector, to have a fire escape plan and actually making them part of the responsibility within the family is amazing," said Counselor Luci Gonzalez.

You can also request a free smoke alarm and installation online at www.epsmokealarm.com.

Fire Prevention Week starts Sunday and runs through the October 13.
