EPPD release identity of motorcyclist killed in East El Paso crash

El Paso Police say that 20-year-old Frank Powers was killed Thursday evening when he was thrown the Kawasaki Motorcycle he was riding on near the intersection of Lee Trevino and Yermoland.

El Paso Police Department Special Traffic Investigation's unit were called to the scene around 6:20 p.m.. Thursday evening. When they arrived, they discovered that a 2009 Ford Focus, driven by 27-year-old Diana Baltazar was driving north on Lee Trevino when she attempted to turn left onto Yermoland. Powers was riding his motorcycle south on Lee Trevino when he collided with Baltazar's Ford Focus. Powers died at the scene.

EPPD say that Powers was wearing a helmet and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, however, police say that Powers' speed was a contributing factor. At this time, no charges are pending against Baltazar.

This is the 49th traffic related fatality of 2013, compared with 55 at this time in 2012. This is also the 9th motorcycle fatality.
