Facebook Data: Gym check-ins a sign of fit cities

El Paso has been notoriously been recognized as one of the fattest cities in America, but according to Facebook, that may not necessarily the case.

Facebook compiled data to make their list of "Facebook's Fittest Cities" and shared it with Yahoo!Shine. El Paso ranked number seven on that list.

It wasn't too long ago when El Paso ranked number seven on Men's Fitness Magazine's list of the fattest cities.
The calculations for the Facebook list are based on things like fitness-related status updates, checking-in at the gym and the use of fitness apps.

Not everyone is convinced.

"It could just be that people like to check-in their Facebook while they're in the gym, just to show everybody they're at the gym more than anything," said Victor Martin who was working out in West El Paso.

James Ecker, who was also at the gym, doesn't agree either.

"I don't think it's accurate to base fitness on check-ins. I know I work out all the time and I never check-in to social media," said Ecker.
Juan Taveras, a local doctor believes there is a positive connection between social media and working out.

"Having other people check-in to the gym, they say, 'Wow, this is encouraging. Maybe I should be checking-in to the gym as well.'"
Martin said whether El Paso is fit or fat could be a matter of opinion.

"Judging by the amount of people I see at the gym on any day, it definitely could be pretty accurate."
