LAS CRUCES — El Paso's former bishop says pope benedict's decision to step down is both humbling and inspiring. Bishop Armando Ochoa was in Las Cruces last night, attending the farewell mass of Las Cruces Bishop Ricardo Ramirez. Bishop Ochoa has met the pope on several occasions. He says he was just as shocked as everyone to learn the news, but says he admires the pope's decision to put the church above himself.
"At the age of 85, pushing 86, how many people are out there at that age, having a schedule such as his? I saw him about 10 months ago and he was fragile with the California bishops went to Rome?" said Ochoa.
Ochoa is now a Catholic bishop in Fresno, California. The El Paso Diocese is still awaiting his replacement.
