A local eyesore and former landfill is being transformed into a brand new park. Today was the groundbreaking cerermony for the brand new Cheryl Ladd Park in East El Paso.

The 1.6 million dollar state of the art park will include playgrounds, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts and exercise equipment.

"I think that it's great because a lot of people I'm sure a lot of people are going to be able to walk around and they won't have to go to other parks and as far as the noise its music to my ears," East El Paso resident Janny Graves said.

The 7-acre park is part of the city's quality of life bond projects approved by voters in 2012. City Rep. Eddie Holguin and residents say this was not easy to accomplish.

"We had to get this taken care of not just clean it up but we also had to acquire the property which was a process all on its self after we acquired the property we had to go to all of the taxing entities to forgive the taxes so that the city could acquire it," Holguin said.

Neighbors say it will be a drastic change for the area, several years ago the site was a medical disposal field used since the 80's.

"It was a dump the house was built in a dump I mean it was horrible it was mountains and mountains of trash and dangerous too," resident Esperanza Lujan said.

"Probably 7 or eight feet of trash and so over the course of the last 10 years the solid waste management department was able to relocate all this trash to the greater El Paso landfill," County official Ellen Smyth said.

After many years of resident petitions the city was able to take posession of the property and finally make their dream come true.
"Oh I'm glad I'm happy its finally coming to be done with its been a long time waiting," Lujan concluded.

The company that will be in charge of construction work is based locally. City officials say the new park is expected to be open by spring 2014.
