HOUSTON — Former President George H. W. Bush spent the Christmas holiday in a Texas hospital.
He was admitted more than a month ago and has been battling the lingering effects of bronchitis.
Doctors had said he was doing better, though, and even believed at one point that he would be home for the holidays.
Bush's spokesman says a low-grade fever and other issues prevented him from being released.
"He's had a series of setbacks that have complicated the timeline for his release, but his doctors have been cautiously optimistic that they have his current issues under control," said a spokesperson for the Bush family. "He's surrounded by his family. That's the best medicine. It's not the ideal way to spend Christmas, but he's playing with the hand he's been dealt."
No word yet on when Bush could be released.
On Sunday, a hospital spokesman said he was in stable condition.
