Wednesday, December 18, 2013 - 9:52pm

Former Socorro Mayor and school district board member Guillermo "Willie" Gandara Sr. will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo at 10a.m. on Thursday, December 19th, on a public corruption charge.

Gandara admitted that when he was a school district board member, he traded votes with Frank Apodaca and Access Healthcare in exchange for financial benefits.

He also negotiated a construction contract in exchange for his vote.

Gandara pleaded guilty to one charge of wire fraud in exchange to drop the mail fraud charges, as part of a deal back in July.

Under the plea deal, Gandara can face up to 42 months in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Montalvo said to Mena that despite the sentence, Mena is still in a position to make up for his wrongdoing. 'Unlike every single defendant, you still have information that could benefit the government to put people in prison,' said Montalvo.
