Fort Bliss names Maj. Gen. Stephen Twitty as commanding general

The Department of Defense has announced that MG Stephen M. Twitty will serve as the new commanding general of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss. Twitty will replace MG Sean MacFarland who has been the commander at Fort Bliss since native El Pasoan MG Dana Pittard left in 2013.

Twitty will leave Fort Bragg, NC, where he has served as the deputy chief of staff of the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM). Previously at Fort Bliss, Twitty commanded the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division from August 2005-March 2008, including a deployment for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Twitty was later assigned at Fort Bliss from September 2010 through March 2012 as the deputy commanding general of operations for the 1st Armored Division.

Twitty is a native of Chesnee, South Carolina. He holds an undergraduate degree from South Carolina State University and a Master's degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University, along with a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University.

Twitty began his military career in 1985. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal in 2003 for heroic actions as a leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom, when he was serving as an infantry battalion commander.
