Gay and lesbian veterans win settlement

Tuesday, January 8, 2013 - 11:43pm

Dozens of gay and lesbian veterans have won a big victory in federal court. A judge Monday awarded a $2.4 million settlement to more than 180 veterans who were discharged from the military because of their homosexuality. Those veterans received only half of their separation pay. Separation pay is granted to military personnel who serve at least six years, but the Defense Department had a list of conditions that trigger an automatic reduction in pay. That list included homosexuality. The ACLU took the Department of Defense to court over the policy and won. The settlement covers former military members who were discharged on or after November 10th of 2004.
