El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — Students at an El Paso elementary school got to meet a very special guest today. Former U.S. Secretary of State and retired U.S. Army General Colin Powell visited his name sake school today, General Colin Powell Elementary.
He spent several minutes talking to the students and fielded their questions about everything, from education to his career in the military. He even brought the students a gift.
"I walked all around my home looking for something I could bring as a gift to the school as a momento and I found in my study this globe i've had for many, many years given to me by a president of a foreign country and I thought this would be cool," Powell told the students when presenting the autographed gift.
"He's very humble. He traced everything back to the time he was a student and how he emphasized public schools and so being a public school we certainly connected with that," said Andrew Veileux, principal at the school.
General Colin Powell Elementary opened its doors in 2007 and has been trying to bring the retired general to El Paso ever since.
