UPDATE: Emergency crews cleared the scene at 2 a.m. Thursday, according to New Mexico State Police. Businesses were allowed to reopen and employees were allowed back inside.

ORIGINAL: A hazmat team worked late into the night evacuating between 120 and 150 employees of a chile pod processing plant near Pete Domenici Highway and Airport Rd. in Santa Teresa.

According to New Mexico State Police, they started complaining of watery eyes, itchy throats and a chemical taste in their mouths at about 8 p.m.

State police said it's their first priority to make sure all the employees are safe.  They described it as a chile processing plant and the vapors are nontoxic, but irritating just the same.

Airport Road was closed off at Pete Domenici causing truckers delivering loads to the business park to have to park and sleep in their trucks.
