LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A house that will provide a home for homeless women is nearly ready for occupants but needs some minor details before anybody can move in.
'Sue's House' will be home to four women that are defined as permanently disabled and homeless for an extended period of time.
"What's been exciting for me is giving them a place of their own and a place they can call home," said Mesilla Valley Community of Hope Executive Director Nicole Martinez.
Martinez said the women must have some sort of income to contribute to the home and getting along with roommates will also be required.
Community of Hope will provide services to help the women assimilate to living in a house but Martinez said with all the women having experienced homelessness, that will also help provide support for each other.
"They have somebody else that can support them and understand them and help them become self-sufficient," she said.
The home is waiting on a contract from HUD before the women can move in, but Martinez said that can be expected any day.
In the meantime, she has been gathering donations such as cleaning supplies, toiletries and even furniture for the home.
"We need to outfit the rooms with beds and dressers," Martinez said. "We're still trying to obtain linens so we're accepting some gently used items or new items."
The house has already received some contributions from GreenWorks that include making the home energy efficient.
Martinez said this is a priority especially when having to pay utility bills at the unsubsidized home.
She said they have received black-out curtains and even somebody to help install them but they would like to install solar panels to offset electric costs.
Martinez said they have received a $5,000 donation for the project and the donor would like to see that matched to help the sustainability of the home.
To contribute to the project, donations can be made at the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope at 999 West Amador Ave.
