After a two year decline identity theft is back on the rise.
According to a survey by javelin strategy and research, some 12.6 million Americans were victims of ID theft last year.
That's the second-highest total of ID victims since the Federal Trade Commission began keeping track of victims in 2003and roughly 1 million more than in 2011.
The increase was driven by more-serious forms of ID theft such as new account fraud, where criminals use a victim's personal information to open new credit card accounts and other kinds of loans.
New account fraud jumped by 50 percent.
