Red Sands in Far East El Paso County is one of the most popular attractions for ATV riders wanting to take their 4-wheelers wanting to take their four-wheelers on sand dunes and steep hills.

The federal government reports the months of July and August are, on average, the worst months for ATV related deaths.
Jamil Moutran, the owner of Rent an ATV Off-Road Adventures near Red Sands, offers monthly ATV safety courses. He said he often sees very dangerous behaviors.

"You'll see two or three people on one ATV. I've seen as much as five people on one ATV that was specifically designed for one person so that puts them in a very dangerous situation," he said.

Moutrain said most injuries could be prevented if people followed basic safety rules such as wearing a helmet, goggles and protective body gear.

Elias Edair is the manager at Rent an ATV and said sometimes even the most experienced riders can find themselves in trouble, like his uncle who was an experienced motor cross rider.

"He went right over a dune. The dune I think was about 50 feet, 50 ft. high and he just went right over it. It was a drop-off and the drop-offs here are the same thing. He went right over the drop-off. He didn't see it coming and he broke his neck he died," said Edair.

Michael Lindsay was out at Red Sands for his first ATV ride and did not hesitate to take the safety course.

"I had a couple of friends that got into an accident in one of these. You know it actually makes me think that it’s very dangerous," he said.

The safety course is offered once a month, and could be free for people who recently purchased a new ATV in El Paso.
