Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a woman Monday afternoon after she allegedly beat her 23-year-old boyfriend repeatedly in front of her children.

According to a report, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 2200 block of Cedar Grove Street in Hatch. When they arrived, the victim told deputies his girlfriend, 32-year-old Berenice Gallegos-Martinez, hit him over the head and neck with a boot during an argument while he was driving with Gallegos-Martinez and her children in the vehicle. Deputies say the woman also tried to use a tire iron to batter the victim, but the victim was able to disarm her. Gallegos-Martinez then reportedly stabbed the victim in the chest and the leg with a screwdriver before allegedly ripping a piece of molding from the rear door of the car, which she used to try and strangle the victim with. At one point during the ordeal, the vehicle left the roadway, but the victim was able to regain control.

All occupants of the car, including Gallegos-Martinez’s 10-year-old son and two daughters, ages 12 and 13, made it home safely and called 911.

Gallegos-Martinez was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of battery against a household member, one count of intentional child abuse and one count of negligent child abuse.

The woman was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where she was booked on a $10,000 secured bond.

The victim refused medical treatment.
