A program designed to recycle while improving city parks at the same time has proven to be very successful.

The city of Las Cruces' "Bags to Benches" program challeged residents to collect 30,000 plastic bags or 600 lbs. of plastic within six months in exchange for one new park bench. City residents helped collect 1000 lbs. in half that time and their first park bench has already been awarded.

Las Cruces is collecting more plastic bags for a second bench, which they will receive after collecting 1,200 lbs. of plastic or 60,000 plastic bags.

Bags are being collected at several city departments and other businesses that have placed a collection box at their place of business. Those locations are as follows:  Meerscheidt Recreation Center, Las Cruces Regional Aquatics Center, Eastside Senior Center, Munson Center, Branigan Library, City Hall, Benevidez Community Center, Frank Obrien Papen Community Center, Recycle Center, Las Cruces Police Department, Las Cruces Fire Department (Stations 1,2,3,5,6 and 7) NASA, Good Samaritan Retirement Center, Big Lots, Sam's Club and Girls Scouts.
