Las Cruces Police are investigating a suspected armed robbery and shooting that took place late Friday evening.

Police responded to a call of an armed robbery just before 11 p.m. at the Valero Corner Store at 2695 W. Picacho Ave.

A Las Cruces Police officer located the possible suspect just south of the Valero store, on Motel Boulevard, and attempted to make contact with him. According to officials the subject, a Hispanic male possibly in his late teens or early 20s, was armed with a large knife and refused the officer’s commands to drop the weapon.

Investigators believe the officer fired at least one round, striking the subject. The man was treated at the scene before being airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso. His condition is unknown at this time.

The Las Cruces Police officer was not injured. As is standard procedure, the officer will be placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.
