The Las Cruces Police Department and other law enforcement agencies around New Mexico will be targeting motorists who are not wearing their seat belts.

Officers will also be looking for those drivers at night after statistics show there's been a decrease in usage during the nighttime hours and that's typically when there's a higher possibility of being seriously injured due to speeding and drunk drivers.

"It should be second nature as soon as you get in your vehicle," said LCPD Spokesperson Dan Trujillo.

Trujillo said it's also important for children to be properly restrained and in the age appropriate child safety seats.

Police officers are specifically trained to spot drivers and passengers not wearing their seat belts.

The zero-tolerance campaign last year issued close to 7,000 citations throughout New Mexico during a two-week period.
