Las Cruces, NM (KDBC) — UPDATE #2:
Las Cruces Police identified the victim who died in the early morning fight as Jerome Saiz, 37. Investigators arrested Rebecca Gomez, 28, and Leonard Telles, 27, with murder as well as conspiracy and tampering with evidence.
Rebecca Gomez, 28
Investigators believe Saiz was arguing with Gomez, his girlfriend, when Telles got involved and hit Saiz several times with a baseball bat. Police said Gomez encouraged Telles to continue beating Saiz until he was unconscious.
According to Las Cruces Police Spokesperson Dan Trujillo, Saiz had been out with a friend and arrived to his home in the 2000 block of Princess Jeanne at about 1:00 a.m. Saturday. About an hour later, a friend received a phone call from Saiz and overheard a woman yelling. That friend called police.
Leonard Espinoza Telles, 27
When officers arrived, they found Gomez in the driver's seat of a grey Chevrolet Blazer parked in the driveway. She told police no one else was in the house, but officers met with Telles at the front door of the home.
After entering the home, officers found Saiz in one of the bedrooms wrapped in a rolled up rug. Saiz was unconscious, but still alive. He later died at the hospital.
Gomez's two daughters, who are six and seven years old, were inside the house at the time of the attack. They were not injured. They are now staying with other family members.
Gomez and Telles were booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
Las Cruces Police Spokesperson Dan Trujillo said one man and one woman are in custody in connection with the beating death of a Las Cruces man Wednesday morning. Trujillo said no charges have been filed, and also said police are not searching for any other suspects. He said investigators expect to make an arrest Wednesday afternoon.
Neighbors who live across the street from the 37-year-old victim said he has lived in the home on Princess Jeanne Dr. for several years, and also said he lived there with his girlfriend. Trujillo said he could not say if the woman who is in police custody is the victim's girlfriend.
Police have not released the victim's name. They are waiting to notify his next of kin first.
