EL PASO (KDBC) — The severe weather we saw Friday night brought lightning to our area and investigators said it caused a house fire in West El Paso. An elderly woman and her caretaker were displaced.
The fire started at the home on Amelia Drive near Kingsfield Avenue just after 9 p.m. Friday.
Firefighters said they saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the roof.
We talked to the elderly woman's caretaker who said they were in the den watching TV when it happened.
"All of a sudden, we heard a loud thundering and a crash and we thought, ‘Oh, it sounds like lightning hit some place’ and it just shock the house and it kind of scared us a little bit but we just prayed and we said Lord protect us and he did," said Susan Turner.
The two got out of the home safely after smelling smoke.
Firefighters and El Paso Electric confirm it was lightning that hit the home and started the fire.
Damages are estimated at $250,000.
