A group of war veterans returned home to a warm welcome Friday night. The group was part of the Southern New Mexico Honor Flight program that flew the group across the country to visit war memorials honoring their service to the United States.

"Got me out of my wheelchair and got me down the escalator because I had to hear them immediately," said Veteran John Cunningham.

Veterans said the added celebration from friends, family and even people they didn't know, made the trip even more meaningful.

"Feel it in your heart and appreciate the reception that we got. It's beautiful. Just awesome," said Veteran Ruben Ramos. “Gratifying that we had people like this recognizing what the veterans have done.”

Brosbero Chavez was joined by his son on the trip.

"They got to see the museums and the monuments which was a great experience because he's never seen them," said Ray Chavez.

A once in a lifetime opportunity that bonded these men.

"Even though they didn't know each other, it's like they were companions forever," said Chavez.

Friends, family and volunteers for the program gathered to make sure these vets got the recognition they deserve and will continue to get.

"Even though we don't know them. We're very proud of them and their service to our country," said Rebecca Martinez, a volunteer with the Honor Flight Program.
