Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office investigators say a man wanted on charges that he beat his girlfriend in the face while she held their 11-month-old son surrendered to authorities on Sunday.

Investigators had obtained a warrant for 25-year-old Chester Hamilton. Deputies allege Hamilton was in an argument with his girlfriend on Friday, June 14, and hit her in the face with a closed fist. The woman, who had the couple's infant son in her arms, was able to escape from Hamilton with the baby and her six-year-old daughter.

Hamilton then allegedly doused his mobile home with charcoal lighter fluid with intentions of destroying it, but changed his mind.

Investigators say Hamilton, who knew a warrant was issued for him, called 911 on Sunday and turned himself in. He was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on charges of aggravated battery against a household member, child abuse and battery on a household member.

At the time of his arrest, he also had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines.
Hamilton is being held on a $20,000 cash bond.
