Monday, November 26, 2012 - 2:41pm

EL PASO — In honor of World AIDS Day, El Paso Mayor John Cook  was tested for HIV by International AIDS Empowerment, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS regionally, nationally and internationally.

Through his example, Mayor Cook hopes to inspire El Pasoans to get tested for HIV.

"We are proud to have a mayor who leads by example. We hope that his action in being tested for HIV encourages El Pasoans to take action and get tested for themselves. The test is quick and simple and results are ready in the matter of minutes," said Skip Rosenthal, Chief Executive Officer of International AIDS Empowerment, Las Cruces, NM; El Paso, TX.

As part of the December 1 World AIDS Day, International AIDS Empowerment (IAE) will be joining the La Fe CARE Center in offering free HIV testing at Premiere Cinemas inside of Basset Center from 10am to 7pm on Nov. 29.

Additionally, there will be free movie screenings of RENT at 8am, 10:30am, 1pm, 3:30pm at UTEP Union West, Room 111 on Saturday, Dec. 1.
